Setting Up Games

← Guide

Create a game session, invite your players, assign characters, and get the table ready.

Creating a Game

Go to Games → New Game. A game ties a live session to one of your campaigns — think of it as the table where your campaign comes to life.

Game NameA short name for this table, e.g. "Friday Night Group" or "Online Session".
CampaignSelect which campaign this game will run. The game inherits all chapters, NPCs, and characters from the campaign.

Inviting Players

From the game detail page, use one of two methods to get players in:

Copy Invite Link

Generates a join URL you can paste into Discord, a group chat, or email. Anyone with the link can view the join page — but only join if Open Registration is on or you approve them.

Open Registration

Toggle on to allow anyone with the link to join immediately, or leave it off if you want to control who joins. Toggle it off again once your table is full.

◈ Tip

Your game also appears on the Browse Games page when Open Registration is on — new players can discover it there too.

Assigning Characters to Players

Once players have joined, each player row in the Players list shows a character dropdown. Select a campaign character for each player — this links their account to that character sheet.

Once assigned, the player can view their character sheet from Games → [Game] → Character Sheet, and it will also appear in the Owlbear extension panel.

◈ Tip

Characters must exist in the campaign before they can be assigned. Add them in the campaign detail under the Characters section.

Setting the Active Chapter

The Active Chapter dropdown on the game page controls which chapter's content loads in the Owlbear extension for all players. Change it as the session progresses to reveal new locations and NPCs progressively.

◈ Tip

Only the active chapter's maps and NPCs are shown in OBR — this is intentional so you don't accidentally reveal spoilers.

Video Chat Link

Paste a Discord, Zoom, or Google Meet URL into the Video / Audio Chat field and save it. Players will see an Open Video Chat button on the game page — one click gets everyone into the same call without hunting for links.
